Complete the look
10% off a pair with your rugOur salt and pepper black cowhide rugs blend charcoal, black and white hairs into a fine, even speckle. The result is a soft, modern grey cowhide that brings texture to monochrome, industrial and Scandi homes without the bold patches of a classic black and white.
Every hide is genuine Brazilian cowhide, hand-selected, photographed and measured by us. Choose your size, then pick the exact hide number you love. Its measurements and square metres are listed right next to it.
Why people love salt and pepper black
It's the cowhide for people who love a modern look. It sits beautifully on concrete, pale timber and grey tiles, and the speckled pattern hides everyday dirt and pet hair brilliantly. Salt and pepper hides are less common, so we only have a small number at a time.

The salt and pepper black cowhide guide
Charcoal tones with a soft, modern edge
Salt and pepper black is a speckled blend of charcoal, black and white hairs. It gives you the look of a classic black and white cowhide, softened into a moody grey that's easy to live with. It's our pick for modern homes, monochrome spaces and anyone who wants a cowhide that feels a bit more city than country.
- Cool charcoal tone for modern and monochrome spaces
- The speckle is very forgiving with dirt and pet hair
- A rare pattern, hand picked in small numbers
Where it looks its best
- Living room
- Pair it with a white, grey or black lounge and keep cushions in cream and charcoal. A Jumbo grounds a big open-plan space.
- Home office or study
- Under the desk chair or in front of a bookcase, it adds texture and softens hard floors and echo.
- Bedroom
- With white linen and black bedside tables it looks crisp and hotel-like. Lay it across the bottom of the bed.

Salt and Pepper Black Cowhide Rug questions
Still wondering? Send us a message or a photo of your space and we'll help you choose.
Is salt and pepper black the same as a black and white cowhide?
No. A black and white cowhide has bold, separate patches. Salt and pepper black has the black and white hairs mixed together in a fine speckle, so it reads as a soft charcoal grey from a distance.
Will it look too dark in my room?
Most salt and pepper black hides have plenty of white through them, so they look grey rather than black. Check the photos of each hide, as some are lighter and some deeper. Message us if you'd like a photo in natural light.
Does it suit timber floors?
Yes, especially pale or mid-tone timber. The cool charcoal is a lovely contrast against warm floors.
Is the hide in the photos the one I'll get?
Yes. Each hide number is one real rug, photographed and measured by us. Pick the hide you love and that exact hide is the one we send. Cowhide is natural, so colours can look a touch different on different screens.
Do cowhide rugs shed or fade?
Some shedding is normal with any hide or hide product. Friction causes more hair to shed, and shorter-haired hides are more prone to it, so keep that in mind for high-traffic areas. To protect the colour, keep it out of harsh all-day sun. Read more about shedding and fading.
How do I clean it?
Shake it outside or vacuum with the brush head on low, going with the grain. Blot spills straight away with a clean dry cloth, working from the outside in. Avoid soaking, steam cleaners and harsh chemicals, and let it air dry away from direct heat. Our full care guide.
My rug has creases from being rolled. What do I do?
Lay it flat on a clean, dry floor and leave it for a few days. The hide's own weight usually flattens lighter creases. For stubborn creases only, hold a garment steamer 10 to 15cm above the hair side and never let it touch the hide. How to remove wrinkles.
Will it slip on timber or tiles?
The leather backing grips smooth floors well on its own. For extra peace of mind in busy walkways or homes with little ones, pop a thin rug underlay underneath.
Is it OK with kids and pets?
Cowhide is one of the most practical rugs for family homes. It's hard wearing, doesn't trap dust like carpet, and wipes clean. Patterned hides hide everyday life better than plain light ones.
Is it real and ethically sourced?
Yes. It's 100% genuine Brazilian cowhide with the natural hair on, hand-selected by us and ethically sourced as a by-product of the beef industry, with chemical-free tanning. As a natural product, each hide may have small marks from nature or the tanning process.
How much is shipping, and can I pay it off?
Shipping is free on orders over $200, sent from our studio in Blackwater, Central Queensland. We ship to Australia and New Zealand, and you'll see your delivery estimate at checkout. You can also pay over time with Afterpay or Zip. See our shipping policy.
What if it doesn't suit my space?
You've got 30 days to return it under our returns policy, plus a 12 month warranty. If you're unsure which hide or size to pick, message us a photo of your room first and we'll help you choose.
