Cowhide rug questions

The things people ask us most. Still wondering? Get in touch, we're always happy to help.

Is the rug I receive the one in the photos?

Yes. Each cowhide rug is listed and photographed individually, so the hide you choose is the hide we send. Because cowhide is natural, colours can look a touch different on different screens.

What size cowhide rug do I need?

As a rough guide, Medium suits bedrooms and entryways, Large and Extra Large sit nicely in front of a 3-seater, and Jumbo fills big open-plan spaces. Every listing shows the exact measurements of that hide. See the size guide.

Do cowhide rugs shed or fade?

Some shedding is normal with any hide or hide product. Friction causes more hair to shed, and shorter-haired hides are more prone to it, so keep that in mind for high-traffic areas. To protect the colour, keep it out of harsh all-day sun. Read more about shedding and fading.

How do I clean a cowhide rug?

Shake it outside or vacuum with the brush head on low, going with the grain. Blot spills straight away with a clean dry cloth, working from the outside in. Avoid soaking, steam cleaners and harsh chemicals, and let it air dry away from direct heat. Our full care guide.

My rug has creases from being rolled. What do I do?

Lay it flat on a clean, dry floor and leave it for a few days. The hide's own weight usually flattens lighter creases. For stubborn creases only, hold a garment steamer 10 to 15cm above the hair side and never let it touch the hide. Don't use steam for cleaning. How to remove wrinkles.

Are your cowhides real and ethically sourced?

Yes. They're 100% genuine cowhide, ethically sourced as a by-product of the beef industry, with chemical-free tanning. As a natural product, each hide may have small marks or imperfections from nature or the tanning process.

What's the difference between a calf hide and a cowhide?

Calf hides are smaller, usually around 85 x 95cm, which makes them great for bedsides, nurseries, chairs and smaller spaces. Cowhides are full-size rugs, from about 180cm wide.

How much is shipping, and can I pay it off?

Shipping is free on orders over $200, sent from our studio in Blackwater, Central Queensland. You can also pay over time with Afterpay or Zip at checkout. See our shipping policy for delivery details.

What if it's not right for my space?

We want you to love it. If you change your mind, our returns policy explains how returns work.

About Our Cowhide Rugs

Designed for Australian homes and crafted from genuine cowhide leather, Country Allure rugs celebrate the hide’s natural character - unique markings, tonal variations and hair-on texture. No two are the same. Whether you’re styling a Queenslander, modern apartment or country retreat, a cowhide rug adds warmth, durability and effortless, lived-in luxury.

Why cowhide works in real homes

  • Tough by nature: Dense hair and strong fibre structure handle busy family areas.
  • Stain-resilient: Light spills bead on the hair; quick blotting keeps marks at bay.
  • Hypoallergenic option: Unlike deep-pile synthetics, hair-on hide doesn’t trap dust as easily.
  • Uniquely yours: Brindle, speckled, tri-colour or classic black-and-white - each piece is one of a kind.

Sizing & placement guide

  • Calf hides (about 85 x 95cm): Bedsides, nurseries, reading corners and home offices.
  • Medium to Large hides (about 180 x 190cm to 195 x 200cm): Bedrooms, entries and under a coffee table.
  • Extra Large and Jumbo hides (about 200 x 228cm to 220 x 242cm): Open-plan lounges, master bedrooms and statement spaces.
  • Every listing shows the exact measurements of that hide.

Living rooms: Let the rug front legs sit on the hide to anchor the setting.

Bedrooms: Angle the hide out from the bed for a soft morning step.

Entryways: Choose a darker brindle or patterned hide for high-traffic resilience.

Dining: We generally recommend flat patchwork/leather mats for chair glide; if using hair-on, size up so chairs remain on the hide when pulled out.

Pattern & colour tips

  • Black & White: Bold contrast; works with monochrome or coastal palettes.
  • Brindle (brown mix): Warm and forgiving; perfect with timber floors.
  • Tri-Colour: Lively, organic focal point for neutral rooms.
  • Solid/Dark: Sleek, modern and great at disguising everyday wear.

Styling ideas

  • Layer a cowhide over a flat-weave jute to add texture and scale.
  • Rotate the hide seasonally to even out sun exposure and traffic.
  • Pair with cowhide cushions or a matching throw for a pulled-together look.

Care & cleaning

  • Weekly: Shake outside or vacuum with the brush head on low, going with the grain.
  • Spills: Blot immediately (don’t rub). Wipe with a barely damp cloth and mild soap if needed, then air-dry away from heat and direct sun.
  • Odours: Air the hide; brief outdoor airing in shade works wonders.
  • Shedding: Some shedding is normal with any hide or hide product. Friction causes more hair to shed and shorter-haired hides are more prone to it, so keep that in mind for high-traffic areas.
  • Do not: Machine wash, steam clean or soak. For stubborn stains, consult a leather specialist.

Pro tip: Use a quality non-slip underlay to keep the rug flat and protect floors.

Ethically sourced

Our cowhides are sourced as a by-product of the meat industry - valued, not wasted. Tanned to high standards for longevity, they’re made to be lived with, not tip-toed around.
